Oxford Artist's Retrospective Catalog at Square Books

We recently received copies of the beautiful catalog, John Hathorn: A Retrospective ($25), that showcases a representative life work of the artist, who was born and raised in here in Oxford, a town known more for its literary art than its visual art. This may explain why much of John's work contains script or is created in homage to Rilke and Baudelaire. The retrospective comes from an exhibition organized by the Acadiana Center for the Arts in Lafayette, Louisiana, where John has been an art professor for 31 years at the University of Louisiana - Lafayette and a recipient of the University's 2008 Distinguished Professor Award. A graduate of Oxford High School and the University of Mississippi, many here will be happy and proud to see John Hathorn's work in this fine publication, with introductory commentary by Mary Beyt, Darrell Bourque, and Virginia Billeaud Anderson.  RH

HONORING MEDGAR EVERS AT OFF SQUARE BOOKS

Medgar Evers
(1925-1963)

Most of us recently have seen on television stories about or events commemorating Medgar Evers, as it is now fifty years since his assassination in Jackson, Mississippi. Here in Oxford many had the opportunity last month to hear Myrlie Evers Williams' moving and inspirational commencement address at the University of Mississippi.

At Off Square Books on Friday, June 14, beginning at 5 p.m., we will honor Medgar Evers' life with the appearance of two authors, Minrose Gwin, whose recent book is Remembering Medgar Evers, and poet Frank X Walker, with Turn Me Loose: The Unghosting of Medgar Evers.

Please join us for this special occasion as we continue both to grieve the loss and to celebrate the life of this great man. RH

SQUARE BOOKS BRACES FOR BLOCKBUSTER PAIR OF BOOKS

We tend to wait until later in the year before announcing books that will be published in the fall, but sometimes it just can't be helped. In this case, we are enthusiastic about two very big books and are now taking orders.

John Grisham publishes a new legal thriller fairly reliably each year, and Sycamore Row is next, coming out October 22. The exciting news about Sycamore Row (Doubleday, 28.95) is that it's a sequel to John's first book and the book many of his fans claim as a favorite -- A Time To Kill, which brings Jake Brigance back to life in Ford County. We will have signed copies and they are now available for orders.

September 10 will be another memorable day as it's both the publication and the Square Books event date for Robert Khayat's memoir, The Education of a Lifetime (Nautilus, 24.95). Robert Khayat was the 14th and much-beloved Chancellor of the University of Mississippi, serving from 1995 - 2009. An Academic All-American Ole Miss football player who would one day win the NFL Lifetime Achievement Award and the National Football Foundation's Distinguished American Award, Khayat led the University through an unprecedented period of progress marked by expansion, financial growth, academic excellence, and long-sought-for, hard-fought-for national respect and recognition. He has long been an avid reader and a person of candor, so we expect great things from this memoir and are now taking orders for signed copies.

Coming soon -- More advance news on books by, and events with, Tom Franklin and Beth Ann Fennelly, Dan Woodrell, Jesmyn Ward, Jonny Miles, Allan Gurganus, and James Beard Award winning chef and the man who made food a happening in Oxford, Mississippi -- John Currence -- RH
