John C. Waugh, a renowned historical writer on matters
of the Civil War, offers one of his most fascinating accounts
yet, Surviving the Confederacy: Rebellion,
Ruin and Recovery -- Roger and Sara
Pryor During the Civil War (Harcourt, hd. 28.00). This
is a portrait of one of the South's most well-known and admired
couples, exemplifying the South's pride and success as well
as becoming victims of its demise. This fascinating social history
follows their transformation from the 1850s into the twentieth
century.
Grady McWhiney, Professor Emeritus of History at Texas Christian
University, praises this book as "a greater work of history
than Gone With the Win is a novel. By far the fullest account
I have ever read of a man and his wife and their family during
the Civil War."
