I give it six stars (******) in the Tokyo Dome!
This book will go down as one of the best works to come out of our current true crime craze; up there with Serial, Making a Murderer and The People vs. O.J. Even if you aren't a fan of the genre's blood and violence, McNamara provides insight into the obsessive nature of investigators (pro and amateur alike) and the toll it takes on their lives. Raymond Chandler wrote that the ideal mystery is one "you would read if the ending was missing," and I'll Be Gone in the Dark meets that high mark.
This was one of my favorite reads of 2017. Whitehead brings a speculative twist to the American slave narrative, taking the reader through America's dark past via a literal Underground Railroad. A disturbing and timely work.
