John Brandon farewell reading

Our buddy and writer, John Brandon, is leaving Oxford for the big city of Baltimore by the end of the summer.  John has been living in Oxford the last two years. He came to Oxford as a Grisham visiting writer and stayed an additional year to fill in for the sudden absence caused by the death of Barry Hannah, who picked John to come here, and, alas, was the last writer that Hannah had selected for the prestigious position. We've enjoyed having John around and we've loved both of his books--Arkansas and Citrus County. I'm sure this will not be his last reading at Square Books, but it's serving as a sort of going-away party for now. John's latest novel, Citrus County, received a beautiful paperback treatment from awesome indie publisher McSweeney's.  Be sure to check it out at the reading. Citrus County was also the first selection in the Square Books Broadside Series. Read more on that here, and listen to a podcast of John's last reading with Jack Pendarvis here.

There shouldn't be a Citrus County. Teenage romance should be difficult, but not this difficult. Boys like Toby should cause trouble but not this much. The moon should glow gently over children safe in their beds. Uncles in their rockers should be kind. Teachers should guide and inspire. Manatees should laze and palm trees sway and snakes keep to their shady spots under the azalea thickets.
