Karl Marlantes will be at Off Square Books to read and sign copies of Matterhorn.
Several of us at Square Books have not been able to restrain our enthusiasm for Matterhorn, the vivid and powerful story of Lieutenant Waino Mellas and the other young Marines of Bravo Company who battle the jungle, disease, leeches, starvation, wild animals, fear, mistrust, and, of course, the North Vietnamese. Karl Marlantes, a graduate of Yale and a Rhodes Scholar who served in Vietnam, is a businessman who worked for thirty years to write this, his first novel, initially rejected due to its 1,600 page manuscript and finally published in a pared-down version by a non-profit press on the West Coast. It is now republished by Morgan Entrekin at Grove Atlantic and already has been compared to such classic war literature as James Jones' The Thin Red Line and Norman Mailer's The Naked and The Dead. Please join us for a special event with Karl Marlantes at Off Square Books on May 13. RH
