Nathaniel Philbrick "The Last Stand"

Wednesday, May 19, 2010 - 5:00pm

Nathaniel PhilbrickNoted historian and National Book Award winner Nathaniel Philbrick (In the Heart of the Sea, Mayflower) will be dropping by Square Books to sign copies of The Last Stand.

The Last Stand is vintage Philbrick. Here we find the same streamlined storytelling and vigorous prose that characterized In the Heart of the Sea, which won a National Book Award, and Mayflower, which was a NY Times top ten book of the year. Nathaniel Philbrick’s new offering is, however, more than a stylistic success, for The Last Stand reframes the conventional story of Little Bighorn. Often described as a clash of titans, the great contest between Custer and Crazy Horse, the 1876 battle becomes, in Philbrick’s telling, the scene for what he calls “two last stands”; this event ended the fantasy of white military omnipotence and dashed hopes for Native American political autonomy. A sobering tale about pride and its terrible price, The Last Stand should be required reading for thinking citizens. TM
