Stephen Messer’s debut novel Windblowne is a delight. Oliver, a sweet and persistent failure at making and flying kites, lives in Windblowne, an archaic flash-frozen countryside absolutely bonkers about kites. He comes from a family of kite-smiths, and every festival season he is yet again stripped of his foolish flying spirit and relegated to a seeming future of manual labor. One fateful day his luck takes a sharp turn, and he is adopted by a rogue kite who leads him into a strange and perilous world. The dialogue between Oliver and the kite rolls out eloquently like Etta James’ melodic conversation with a saxophone, with a twist of Dickens. JM
