In September 1962, James Meredith attempted to become the first African American to enroll at the University of Mississippi (UM). Opposition to Meredith culminated in a riot captured in shocking, historic photographs by 22-year-old UM graduate student/press office photographer Meek, whose photos recorded the entire time line of events and surpassed those of veteran photojournalists.
